Phoenix Sports slipped to a narrow 1–0 defeat at home to Whitstable Town on a frustrating evening at the Christopher Russell Stadium on Saturday.

The game began in cagey fashion, though Phoenix carved out the first real threat on five minutes when Jake Goodman challenged well from a long throw, causing problems in the Whitstable box but failing to make proper contact.

Ten minutes later, the hosts put together a slick passing move as Ben Morrison and Will Efambe combined neatly before squaring for Andes Shquti, who fired over from a promising position on the edge of the box.

Whitstable grew into the contest and came close on 31 minutes, with Javaun Splatt heading narrowly wide from a corner. Chances remained limited as both sides battled for control, and the match reached half-time goalless.

Phoenix were called into action early in the second half, with Ryan McCourt producing a vital save on 54 minutes to deny Jack Nelson as the former Rochester United forward broke clear.

It was Whitstable who looked the more likely in the second period, without creating clear-cut chances. On several occasions McCourt had to show assured handling to thwart promising attacks. The goalkeeper has made a really promising start to his Phoenix career.

Jake Goodman’s side were struggling to play their normal game, resorting to long balls that were dealt with comfortably by the Oystermen’s back line.

Seeking fresh impetus, Phoenix introduced Jamarie Brissett and Lyle Della Verde on 70 minutes, replacing Tyller Whitlock-Davis and Harry Barnes.

The match took a controversial turn with five minutes to go. After a dangerous challenge from Whitstable’s Fin Cotton on Ben Morrison, Della Verde tripped Town’s Bradley Walledge during a breakaway and, to the confusion of most inside the ground, it was the Phoenix man who was shown a straight red card. The club has confirmed it will appeal the decision.

Frustratingly, Whitstable capitalised on the man advantage late on, taking the lead in the 89th minute when substitute Nathan Jeche deflected in a strike from distance.

Phoenix almost produced an immediate response, only for Anduel Shquti to be denied by an excellent save from Whitstable goalkeeper Daniel Colmer in stoppage time.

Despite the late pressure, Phoenix were unable to find an equaliser and the match ended 1–0 to the visitors. Next up for Jake Goodman’s side is a trip to Hythe Town on Saturday, 6 December.
