Late heartbreak for Phoenix in opening-day defeat

Phoenix suffered a dramatic opening-day defeat as Petts Wood & Holmesdale scored twice in the closing stages to claim a 3-2 victory at the Christopher Russell Stadium.

Taylor Fisher and returning midfielder Lee Bird were on target for Phoenix, who led 2-1 with five minutes remaining before a controversial penalty and an added-time header turned the contest on its head.

Will Samways, Louie Procopi, Steve Townsend and Isaac Hadlow were all handed their competitive debuts, while Bird and Zak Bryon made their first competitive starts since returning to the club.

Phoenix began brightly and had an early penalty appeal waved away when Khayrie Harris went down inside the area after six minutes, with the referee awarding only a corner.

Harris continued to cause problems down the right and created another opening in the 13th minute. The winger raced in behind the visiting defence but was tackled as he attempted to shift the ball onto his left foot. Michael Fenn was booked for handling earlier in the move.

The hosts’ promising start was rewarded three minutes later. Harris was again at the heart of the attack before Fisher collected possession and curled a composed right-footed finish into the bottom corner to give Phoenix the lead.

However, the advantage lasted just two minutes. A deep cross found Paul Lee at the far post and he flicked the ball home to bring Petts Wood & Holmesdale level.

Phoenix almost gifted the visitors a second goal shortly before the half-hour mark after losing possession while attempting to play out from the back, but Ryan McCourt recovered brilliantly to block Armani Martin’s effort.

The teams went into the break level, and it was the visitors who made the brighter start to the second half. Connor Evans fired narrowly over the crossbar in the 53rd minute, but Phoenix regained the lead three minutes later in spectacular fashion.

Harris drove forward before cutting the ball back to Bird on the edge of the penalty area. The returning midfielder met it with a thunderous strike that flew into the top corner, marking his first competitive appearance back at the club with a superb goal.

Phoenix pushed for a third, with Harris once again creating danger down the right. He found Bryon, whose curling effort drifted narrowly wide, before combining with Bird moments later as the midfielder went close from 25 yards.

Harry Barnes and Louie Downey replaced Townsend and Hadlow in the 69th minute, before Tom Borders came on for Harris, who had produced an excellent display but appeared to be struggling with cramp.

Phoenix looked set to see out the victory in front of an opening-day crowd of 213, but the match changed dramatically in the 86th minute. Jake Goodman sliced an attempted clearance against his own hand and, despite the close proximity, the referee pointed to the spot. The visitors converted to make it 2-2.

Worse followed in the first minute of added time as Phoenix switched off at a corner and Ryan Mahal headed home to put Petts Wood & Holmesdale ahead for the first time.

There was still time for one final moment of controversy. Bird beat the goalkeeper to the ball inside the penalty area before the pair collided, but Phoenix’s appeals for a penalty were waved away.

It was a bitterly disappointing conclusion for Phoenix, who had been within minutes of beginning the 2026/27 campaign with a victory but were ultimately left empty-handed after a remarkable finish.
