Phoenix were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Tunbridge Wells on Tuesday night in a game heavily influenced by dreadful weather conditions and an extremely difficult playing surface.

Played on a pitch where the ball bobbled unpredictably throughout the night and the markings were barely visible, both sides were forced to adapt quickly in what became a scrappy and hard-fought contest.

Phoenix started brightly despite the challenging conditions. Inside seven minutes, Harry Barnes almost caught the home goalkeeper out with a low drive from distance that skidded awkwardly off the surface.

Shortly after, Reagan Corke fired wide following a defensive slip, highlighting the kind of errors both teams would have to contend with throughout the evening.

Tunbridge Wells had a golden opportunity on 17 minutes when Corke broke through one-on-one, but he dragged his effort wide of the post.

Phoenix responded well, with Barnes again going close on 21 minutes, his ambitious 25-yard strike drifting just past the top corner.

As the half progressed, Phoenix began to grow into the game. Paul Lee fired over from inside the box after a series of aerial challenges, while Khayrie Harris was denied by a heavy first touch just as he looked set to pull the trigger.

Right before the break, Phoenix appealed for a penalty when Barnes went down under pressure from the goalkeeper, but the referee waved away the claims.

The sides went into half-time level at 0-0, with both teams battling not only each other but the torrential rain and heavy winds.

The second half continued in a similar vein, with chances at a premium. Phoenix came close on 62 minutes when Jensen Grant’s flick from a corner was well tipped over, and from the resulting set-piece Paul Lee was unable to direct his header on target.

Taylor Fisher then saw an effort fly over the bar following good advantage play from the referee, before Phoenix goalkeeper Ryan McCourt produced an outstanding save on 69 minutes to deny Corke from close range.

Phoenix made a number of changes as they looked to find a breakthrough, with Tyller Davis Whitlock, Lyle Della Verde, and Theo Lukyamuzi all introduced. Despite their efforts, the game remained finely poised heading into the closing stages.

However, with just three minutes remaining, the decisive moment arrived. A defensive slip allowed Tunbridge substitute Daika Montague to drive the ball across goal, and Lucas Murrain was on hand to convert from close range and give the hosts the lead.

Phoenix pushed late on with Jamarie Brissett having their best chance with their last touch of the game. Lukyamuzi fired the ball across but the ball bobbled up in front of Brissett who skied his effort from 12 yards out and Tunbridge Wells held on to secure all three points.

In a game where conditions played a major role, Phoenix will feel unfortunate not to come away with something, having matched their opponents for large spells in a tightly contested encounter.

Phoenix now know that they can barely afford another slip up with six games remaining if they are to have a chance of ending the season in the play-off positions.

Next up for Phoenix is a home clash with Holmesday on Saturday 28 March (3pm).
